Attached to this email is the 1/2 page ad that Moosehead will be placing in the next issue of Rugby Magazine. It is the first in a series of ads that they plan to run this year.
A recap of the tournament (from my jaded perspective) is attached. There is very little (no) mention of the outstanding individual efforts that were exhibited by many but that is really in the interest of time. I am sure that highlights can be filled in later.
We need to firm up the individual commitments to both Savannah (March 15 & 16) and to Missoula (April 26) this week.
Taking a 7's side to Wrightsville has been proposed by Rob Greenough. I believe that the only bracket is 35+ but if there is enough interest, the tournament would open up an older bracket.
Richard Morris is looking to organize a U-21 Cardinals side to Saranac. Anyone who has a young Cardinal in mind or other input should contact Richard.
The website is up (www.CardinalsRugby. com) is up and will be getting updated with photos, Paypal, buying kit, committing to tours, as soon as possible. Anyone who is interested in helping with the website should speak up.
Vancouver - I am getting together firm dates from the guys in Vancouver and will follow up with that information in the next week. Expect that it will be approximately May 7 - May 12
2008 Fort Lauderdale Ruggerfest
A great weekend. The Cardinals entered 4 sides in the Fort Lauderdale Ruggerfest including the 35+, the 45+, the 50+ and the inaugural 55+.
Saturday:
10AM saw the 45+ Cardinals kick-off against the Niagara Old Boys side (NOBS). The 45's were rusty but effective and got stronger as the match progressed. It was a decisive victory.
11AM - the 35+ Cardinals kicked off against Daytona. The 35+ JV were shorthanded. Surprised and disappointed that bad weather and other factors combined to keep about half of the committed from arriving and contributing.
NOON - the 50+ Cardinals defeated the Fort Lauderdale 50+ side in their only match of the day. We had good numbers and posted a solid win.
2PM - the 45+ Cardinals were back on the field against the 45's from Life and played a beautiful match winning in strong fashion. Winning this match put the 45's in the finals for a rematch of the 06' and 07' finals. Both losses for the Cardinals.
4PM - For the first time in the US - the 55+ bracket. The Cardinals won a great match against the Florida Old Boys.
5PM - the 35+ Cardinals second match of the day, Trinidad. After the tough match Saturday morning, we experienced a few casualties and had even lower numbers. As the crowd went from the 55's match to catch the kick off of the 35's, we saw that the 35's were being reinforced by a dozen or so of the 45's and 50's. The 45's had already played two matches on a day that the temperature reached 89. They were healthy and had earned a rematch in the final on Sunday that they had wanted for a year. The contributions of the 45's and 50's to the 35's in the match against Trinidad was a special moment in the history of the Cardinals. The team from Trinidad won the match but the Cardinals gained more from that match than from any other match in the tournament.
Saturday evening - After the last match we went to the South African bar, the Kalahari. It has become a tradition and was a great way to be together at the end of the day. They had the charcoal fired up and we grilled our dinner and spent the evening celebrating the day.
Sunday
10AM - 35's win by forfeit over Palmer.
11AM - 50+ Champions - The Cardinals repeated as 50+ Champs winning a tough match against the Florida Old Boys in a repeat of last years final. The game was marked by excellent team play in every regard. Impressive tries scored by moving the ball effectively and exceptional individual efforts.
1PM - 45+ Champions - The Cardinals faced the Myths & Legends for the third year in a row in the finals. Final score Cardinals 11 - Myths & Legends 7. You know that all matches are the same and none is more important than any other..but.. .
Thanks,
Mike

We are sending 35+, 45+, 50+ teams (and quite a few 55+ players will play in a match against Lauderdale). The entry fees have been paid, but the club hasn’t been reimbursed. It is important that everyone who is going to Fort Lauderdale sends in $20. You don’t need to send duplicate fees if you think you’re going to see action on more than one side…just $20. We’re still waiting on the IRS for our tax ID number, so we can’t get our Cardinals bank account open (hence, there is no Pay Pal option yet). Send the $20 and make the check out to: Mike Herron , 2255 Wake Forest St. , Virginia Beach , VA. , 23451 .
If someone needs a jersey, please let either me or Mike Puopolo know asap. We’re taking care of meeting those needs, and will connect with anyone on that one-on-one.
We distributed DVD’s of Aspen ’s matches to anyone who came to the banquet who also played in Aspen . If you were at the banquet, and didn’t get a copy of your team, please let me know…we’ll get you one. If you didn’t make the banquet, but would like a copy, they run $25. Please add $5 for postage. We’ll mail you one as soon as we can. I have some orders already (from some of the 35+ team)…those will go out as soon as we get your check. Send those to me as well.
We’re really working hard behind the scene to get things sorted out regarding the 501 C-3 (the IRS has our paperwork), the bank account, and getting kits and other things ordered easily. I’ll be sending out a follow-up e-mail regarding other merchandise within the next week.
As we approach the tournament, Mike Puopolo will send out information on our run through at 5PM on February 22nd. We’d like to know where everyone is staying, so e-mail me regarding your whereabouts. A lot of folks are staying at The Plantation Hotel & Conference Center (934-556-8200), but you want to book it through Orbitz. That will be where Moosehead delivers beer, so it should be a worthwhile visit.
That’s it for now…any questions, just let me know. Regards to all, Mike Herron
