Cardinals participate in New Zealand Ambassabor's Shield Cup in Washington DC, Nov 9th,2008

This was a magnificent rugby day and a magnificent Cardinal side. We had players on this side with ages ranging from the late thirties to mid 50's dotted with 10 former Eagles that have served our National side over the last twenty five years. Of special note today Mike Coyner, former Eagle and Eagle 7s Coach, former Eagle Mark Miller, and former Eagle and Eagle Captain, over 20 caps, Brian Vizard joined us for the first time to support the Cardinals today on the field of play.

Special thanks to Bill Gardner,Team Manager. His sides always have the buzz going on,never disappointing, will risk everything to score.

Thank you Mike Puopolo and John Carr for all the background support.

We must recognize Steve Yeager and Rob Christian for their hard work on defense. Steve is the epitome of a dedicated flanker; Steve played his ass off. Rob,our Fly, had all the flair on offence and on defense he looked like a flanker. Thank you,Boys!

Ed Gafney lifted his game in the second period with some dynamic forward moves that galvanized our forwards and got us moving forward.

Former Eagle David Ries looked unbelievably lethal in the open and proved it with two tries. Prince Hill still has that killer ability to find the try zone and proved it with a touchdown.

Special recognition to Terry Byrd, best rugby player in Va. in late 70s and 80s,for attending.

Thank you Mike Bressi,Greg Ball, and Ric Kempton for attending and supporting your mates.

Thank you Cards for making this a special classic rugby day.

Reflections from Mike Puopolo:

Fellows, It was a beautiful day. Thanks to Cary and Skip for organizing the effort. Going forward, we need to take the pitch with a game plan and we need to communicate that plan to each other before we take the field. The plan needs to be reinforced, or, if necessary, modified at halftime (or between periods). There is NO way that we would let that match end in a tie if we play as a team with a plan. The adjustments that our opponents made over the course of the match were what saved them from defeat. Still, one more minute and we would have won. I am not bothering to specifically thank the old guys that I always play with, and love like brothers, but I would like to thank a few others: Mark Miller - how is your wrist? You were very impressive and I hope that we can enjoy your participation again (in Ft. Lauderdale in about 15 weeks). Rob Christian, Steve Yeager, Jamie Forbes, and Dave Ries were all impressive and stood out.

I would like to apologize to Larry Sweger for not giving him the ball on a switch when the gap was there. Prince, sorry I hit you in the hands with the only pass I threw you. I know that after seeing my other passes that you couldn't have expected it.

We are putting the schedule for 2009 together now and are hopeful that the fellows on this roster will be available for a good weekend in Lauderdale on Feb 28 and March 1. We expect to enter 35+, 45+, 50+ and 55+ sides. Last year, we won the three older brackets. In 2009, the goal is to win all four brackets. I will get an email out to the Cardinals in the next couple of weeks. Most of the fellows will arrive in Lauderdale on Friday in time for a light practice. Play on Saturday and Sunday. We are planning to have the Cardinals banquet in Lauderdale that Sunday night. Go home on Monday.

Thanks again, Mike Puopolo

Hi Cary

Have Sunday nights plan set. After the Embassy we will be going to Rumors Bar (www.rumorsrestaurant.com). It is located just off Dupont Circle at the intersection of 1900 and M Street, NW. I am putting our players into Hotel Madera which is just around the corner. The best rates for this hotel can be found on www.expedia.com

I've been in touch with Brian as well so its great he can make it again this year.

Only thing I will need now is a final list of your players/partners to go on the list for the Embassy function. If you could get that to me by next Friday (31st) that would be great).

All coming together nicely.

Cheers
Jason

Message from Jason Frost,New Zealand Embassy laison and our host for the day

Hi Cary

Good speaking with you today and looks like we are on track for a great day of rugby on the 9th.

As discussed we have the USA rugby board coming in so want to put on a good show so that they know the East Coast (and DC in particular) is serious about it's rugby. All players (and partners) will be invited back to the Embassy at the conclusion of the days events but I will need to know names etc to put on a list. Due to financial restraints this year there will be a small charge to get in ($10) but this is a small price to pay for a kiwi beer, wine and lamb. The Embassy event only goes until 7:30-8 so we will be working on a late night venue as well and I'll get back to you on this.

An idea we had to entice the Old Boys to hang around for the main game is for them to all gather after their match(s) at a bar near the field (Colonel Brooks Tavern) for a beer and chat about their matches. As the main game does not kick-off until 2 pm there would be plenty of time for this.

We will also be putting a program together for the event and are currently selling adds in it with all proceeds going to local rugby programs. How it works is that any money raised through adds sold by clubs/individuals goes to the rugby program of their choice (minus 25% which helps us pay for the program). The sponsor also goes on the www.ambassadorsshield.com website. With around 1000 people going to the event there is some exposure to be had. I understand the Cardinals may have programs they help support so we would welcome any efforts on this initiative. I've attached the package we are using for this and we need sponsors in by Oct 14th.

One other thing I need to mention. The field at Trinity costs us $4000 roughly for the day plus extra if we tear it up. Therefore if it rains leading up to the event we will not be taking a risk on paying for repairs so will move to an alternative venue. Not sure exactly where this will be yet but will keep you posted.

Let me know what else I can do

cheers
Jason
