The Virginia Cardinals flew into the toney beach resort of Stone Harbor June 16th to gaze upon a perfect venue, perfect sunny weather in the 80's. Rugby camelot. Absolutely fine hospitality at palatial beach home of Tom Chernack and opportunity to hobnot with the Canadians and Team America players on friday evening.

Special thanks to Keith "The Highlander" Mclean for coaching and leading us that day. Thank you Larry Sweger and Mike Puopolo for taking on the Captain chores.

Our match v The Classic East Coast side lead by Richard Thomas started strong with two early tries. We looked hot! Brilliant second try started with skip pass by Puopolo out to Fischer at 13 drifting defense dictated inside pass by Fischer back to Wellsie at inside for move to the corner and finished off by Lewis. It was vintage Cardinal Rugby at its best. After the second try we seemed to drift off focus showing brilliant periods of rugby but not sustaining the momentum to keep the Classic East Coast side from fighting their way back into the match. Despite our worries,we were very impressed with Louis Tulio's first appearance with the Cards at fullback showing pace and striking ability. Big tackles by James Painter,Craig Wells, and Brian Fischer. Chris Petrakes played savy and made some hard tackles. Nate Mangan had a nice run. Larry Sweger blew them away on some runs. Vince Granger looked impressive. VGs off pace running is hard to read and he found space and territory. Tony Fley,President for Team America, wanted to know more about VG as a possible candidate for Burmuda Classic. It was my sad duty to tell Fley that VG's birthdate is classified but possibly in mid-forties. Dave Ries looked dangerous until he twicked his knee. Tony Brooks was his violent self. Jaime Forbes worked his ass off.

Steve Laake
In the end, this match had the feeling of a practice game. Yeah,it was more like a scrimmage for us that will,at least, prepare us well for Saranac and Aspen. Our intensity and vision was in hibernation during periods of the second half of the scrimmage. We had the edge in talent and experience but did not use our vast rugby gifts to control the pace of the game and dictate the terms of engagment. Keith Mclean said it well,"we must adjust on the run" to blunt the moronic ref interpretations and the defensive intensity and rucking skills of the EAST Coast Boys. The Cardinals are capable of still winning matches with less than 30% of the possession but we could have been more patient, sought more territory, and exploited their average back three.

The post match party on the deck above the hotel with the magnificent beach that night was epic. Rugby royalty was there in Ray Cornbill,George Betzler, legendary Eagle coaches and Brian Vizzard, longtime Eagle captain of the early 90s. Fine chat, beer, and food.

We,The Virginia Cardinals Rugby Football Club, have been invited to participate in a premier rugby venue at the toney resort town of Stone Harbor on the Atlantic ocean in South Jersey June 16th. One day,one match, one party, one hotel. We can expect this fixture to be very special.

We will be playing in the curtain raiser prior to the Classic Canadian v Team America. Our younger players can consider themselves candidates for the roster to the Burmuda Classic in Nov,the elite master rugby venue in the world.

Opportunity for all of us to social together as a full team which is just about impossible with our other venues and hobnob with former Canadian and American national players.

Our intentions are to hold two quality rugby games comprising of a U19 Delaware school boy select XV against a U19 Jersey school boy select XV and a East Coast Classic XV against an established Southern XV(Virginia Cardinals), all players in this game will be over 33 yrs of age.

These two games of rugby will be played on June16th 2007 in Stone Harbor, South Jersey. This beach resort is listed as one on the United States top Five seaside communities.

The two games of rugby will add variety and interest and work well with the premier rugby game of the day. That game being the annual Canadian Classics against Team America.

The rugby games will be played on a full size regulation field The field is located (50 yards ) next to the Windrift Hotel which is next to the beautiful beach area of Stone Harbor. Accommodation per room, double occupancy is $170.00.per night, this will include breakfast. Team America's accomodation will be picked up by sponsorship.

No transportation is needed upon arrival at the Windrift Hotel. Transportation will be provided to the touring sides CC & TA upon arrival at Philadelphia Airport and Atlantic City airport. Philadelphia Airport is approximately a 1 hour ride. Atlantic City Airport 30 minutes.

Managers of said teams will be notified of a one and only pick up times at the airports. Transporting of the players will be by 15 seat minivans. Team America's ground transportation will be picked up by sponsorship.

The Windrift Hotel is located directly across the street from the rugby field. The Windrift is an ocean front hotel with a beautiful pool that accommodates children and adults of all ages. Delicious food and drink are served pool side. Evening entertainment can also be enjoyed by numerous hot spots or the windrift's own roof top bar and restaurant. Windrift Hotel web site is www.windrifthotel.com.

Wilmington RFC, Philadelphia RFC, South Jersey RFC, and many other locally organized rugby clubs have pledged their support.

Local sponsors are enthusiastic to support this event and are looking forward to making this gala a success by paying for transportation to and from the airport, post game meal and beer and a evening barbecue.

The day of the games a full medical staff will be available ensuring that all incidences are dealt with accordingly.

Additional fund raising will go on throughout the day. Rugby apparel, food etc will be on sale. All profit will be channeled into Team America's Account.

To date we have promissory sponsorship, which exceed $7500.00.

If we are honored to be chosen as the the selected site at this time, British Lion, and Welsh International and holder of 85 caps, Colin Charvis, has agreed to attend this event! As of March--- he is still available. Colin will be available throughout the entire weekend to meet players, spectators match official's etc.

Evening entertainment will be arranged in conjunction with the top bar and restaurant of the Windrift Hotel. An entry fee will promise a large buffet style meal, silent auction and award ceremony. All profit will be channeled into Team America account.

This is an exciting opportunity for all rugby athletic supporters!

A great deal of interest and enthusiasm has been aroused. Hosting such a prolific game is something our rugby community and sponsors will embrace. I have personnelly played on the rugby field on many occasions and stayed at the Windrift hotel. This event is structured to cater for the entire family.

All will leave South jersey with fond memories.

Respectfully Submitted

Hello Cass,

Glad to hear from you and thank you for the recruiting! We can slot Nate Mangan immediately at lock. Jack Foley and Owen Gardner are eligible for alternate status, immediately, or possible inclusion with our opposing side managed by Richard Thomas. We will give our present invitees a few days to confirm their status and then we may be able to bring Jack and Owen onboard with realistic playtime expectations if some of our present invitees fade. Please encourage Nate,Jack, and Owen to contact me immediately via email or phone 757 532 1356 and I can fill them in with more details. We do not want to turn away any qualified players away for this special weekend. What is your hotel status for the weekend??

Thanks again, Cary
