Jimmy Haygood,Legendary Football Coach at Henderson State University Arkansaw. Lillian Haygood,Jimmy's wife.

According to Tommie Jean Haygood, daughter of Lillian Haygood,Jimmy met Lillian at Henderson State shortly after his arrival there as their football and baseball coach. Jimmy was just out of Vanderbilt University and Lillian was takeing classes at Henderson State University in the fine arts.

This is a picture of my grandfather,Jimmy Haygood, as a student at Vanderbilt University better known as "Shag" on campus. Jimmy "Shag" Haygood is shown here with his varsity sweater and lettered in football in 1904 and 1905. I am guessing that the "Shag" refers to his gift for shagging footballs? He must have been a receiver or back. I do know Jimmy Haygood was a gifted athelete and later a legendary coach in the south. Serving his longest tenure at Henderson State U. from 1907 to 1924. Jimmy's coaching record at Henderson State was epic and he was named to the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame in 1960. Coached at Florida Southern and knew Knute Rockne from football clinics of the day. Assistant Coach at Alabama with Wallace Wade and was on the Rose Bowl team. Coached at Southwestern later named Rhodes University to finish out his career. Jimmy passed away on the job at Rhodes University.

My recollections of Jimmy Haygood are all second hand from my grand mother Lillian "Bene" Haygood and my mother Tommie-Jean Haygood. I know from the family lore that my mother was applied with a masculine name because the parents were hoping dearing for another son. If any relatives or friends visit this site please reply if ya know any more stories about Jimmy Haygood. I will gladly include your words at this site.

This photo was made at the Moore reunion ca 1928. Your grandfather & grandmother are in back right. I imagine you can identify. This reunion was held at the old homeplace of George A Moore, who was Jimmy Haygood's grandfather. George A Moore settled in Hustburg,Tn area around 1850 and was a quite prosperous farmer. He farmed what is called the Duck River bottom land often referred to as the world's biggest corn field. These bottoms are now covered by Ky Lake, formed when TVA built Ky Dam at Gilbertsville,Ky. The older gentlemen in middle of photo are sons of George A Moore. Your Greatgrandmother Elizabeth Virginia Moore was deceased at time of this family get together. She died May 20,1910 and I am most sure is buried in Ebenezer Cementary in Hustburg (Humphreys Co,Tn). This is just a few tidbits about the Moore side of the family. I have another photo of Jimmy Haygood made with all his uncles, made the same day, but I can't find it right now . I can identify most everyone in photo. The only one of any public notariety is Jerry Rivers, who was in Hank Williams Sr Drifting Cowboys Band during Hank's big years. If you have any questions just e-mail me.

Andy, I love the photos on the computer. Thanks. Your verbage seems reasonably correct except for this fact:

Daddy,Jimmy Haygood, died in a hotel in Little Rock , Ark, on January 18, 1935. My sis ter Nancy may know so I will ask her if she remembers the hotel name. He was staying there during a recruiting session in Arkansas for atheles. After a short while on the road, he experienced what we have to assume was excruaiting pain and he turned the car around and went back to the hotel where he had been the night before and asked the desk clerk to call a doctor as he went up to his room. The doctor came right away, but daddy die anyway within a very short time.

He is buried in Arkadelphia Ark. at Rose cemetry where I want my ashes buried and where I have already had a concrete marker placed with my name and date of birth.

I think Bene had told me whe was 16 when the above picture was made. (Just remember she always subtrcted years from her real age for some reason.) Daddy was 52 when he died and I think she having been born in 1892 was about 43 years when Daddy died.

I never asked how old Dad was in the photo. Whether he was still at Vanderbilt or at Henderson College in Arkadelphia.

I am curious about where you collected all the information you have about him. I think it is wonderful that you are interested. You know I have some geneology facts relative to his family. the next time you are over, we can get them down from the high shelf in the garage. Maybe I ought to try to get more information. You know Haygood is a veery prominent name in Va Beach.

Love, JHK(Tommie Jean Haygood Kennedy)

Cary It's great to make connection with Haygood family. My mother, who died at age 97 last yr, and Jimmy Haygood were first cousins. His mother Jennie and my grandfather John pirtle Moore were brother and sister. Jimmy shows up in several old familly reunion photos with John pirtle Moore and the Moore bothers.

These photos sparked an interest in who was Jimmy Haygood and what ever happened to him and his family. Since I posted inquiry on Gen Forum I have developed a great deal of info on him thru Vanderbilt University. According to my Mother, Jimmy had a great affection to the Moore side of his family and always came back to Humphreys Co,Tn. for family get togethers. I have a lot of info on Moore family if you are interested.
